С. 24-57.https://repository.marine-research.ru/handle/299011/16114This article is the first part of a comprehensive study on the history of parasitological research on Lake Baikal. V.E. Zaika is a well−known hydrobiologist and popularizer of scientific knowledge. He earned his Doctor of Biological Sciences degree in 1972 and was elected a corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of the Ukraine in 1978. V.E. Zaika became a Professor in 1988 and served as the Director of the Institute of Biology of the South Seas during two terms from 1977 to 1982 and from 1993 to 1999. He graduated from Leningrad University (1953–1958), where he had the privilege of studying under renowned scientists E.M. Kheysin, A.V. Gusev, and S.S. Shulman, all of whom were students of the eminent zoologist, protistologist, and parasitologist V.A. Dogiel. V.E. Zaika dedicated his entire life to studying the nature of marine reservoirs. However, there was a brief chapter in his scientific journey between 1959 and 1962 when he had a fortunate opportunity to conduct research on Lake Baikal. Initially he worked at the Baikal Limnological Station and then, in 1961, he continued his research at the Limnological Institute of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The findings from these studies, led to the preparation and publication of the monograph “Fish parasite fauna in Lake Baikal” in 1965. This fundamental research into the nature of our planet’s unique reservoir positioned V.E. Zaika alongside the outstanding Baikal scientists such as G.Y. Vereshchagin, M.Y. Bekman, D.N. Taliev, E.A. Koryakov, and others. For the first time, unknown pages of the scientist’s life are revealed, shedding light on his childhood, university education, and the pivotal moment he arrived at Lake Baikal. This work draws on archival materials, widely published articles, and bio-bibliographic publications and information. The article is enriched with rare photographs and documents, many of which are published for the first time.Эта статья представляет собой один из этапов работы по изучению истории паразитологических исследований оз. Байкал. В.Е. Заика — известный ученый-гидробиолог, популяризатор научных знаний, доктор биологических наук (1972), член-корреспондент Национальной академии наук Украины (1978), профессор (1988), директор Института биологии южных морей (1977−1982, 1993−1999). Выпускник Ленинградского университета (1953−1958), ученик Е.М. Хейсина, А.В. Гусева, С.С. Шульмана — учеников В.А. Догеля — выдающегося ученого-зоолога, протистолога и паразитолога. Большая часть творческой жизни В.Е. Заики была связана с изучением природы морских водоемов. Но в его научной карьере был короткий период (1959−1962), когда ему посчастливилось работать на Байкале: сначала на Байкальской лимнологической станции АН СССР, потом с 1961 г. — в Лимнологическом институте СО АН СССР. По результатам этих исследований была подготовлена и напечатана в 1965 г. монография «Паразитофауна рыб озера Байкал». Этот фундаментальный труд по изучению природы уникального водоема нашей планеты поставил В.Е. Заику в один ряд с выдающимися учеными-байкаловедами Г.Ю. Верещагиным, М.Ю. Бекман, Д.Н. Талиевым, Е.А. Коряковым и другими. Впервые представлены неизвестные страницы жизни ученого: его детство, обучение в Ленинградском университете и документально установлено, почему он приехал работать на Байкал. В работе использованы архивные материалы, опубликованные в широкой печати статьи, биобиблиографические издания, сведения.
