Материал Primary production and bacterioplankton dynamics in the Black Sea during the cold season(2008) Sorokin, Yu. I.; Sorokina, O. V.Phytoplankton primary production, bacterioplankton abundance, chemosynthesis rate and the total bacterioplankton production were measured in the Black Sea during the cold season from early February to April 1991. Primary production was found at its seasonal maximum, which corresponded to the winter - early spring diatom bloom. Photosynthesis rate at the surface varied between 20 and 120 mg C m"3d"', with the maxima in the central cyclonic eddies. Integrated primary production in the water column ranged between 0.4 and 1.2. g C m"2d'' in the central eddies and between 0.2 g and 0.4 g C m"2 d'1 at their margins. The whole basin annual production was assessed at 80 x I06t C y*1. Bacterioplankton abundance ranged between 0.8 and 1.1 x 106 cells ml"1 in the upper mixed layer, between 0,6 and 0.8 x 106 cells ml"1 in the redox interface layer and between 0.2 and 0.5 x 106 cells ml"1 in the cold intermediate layer (CIL). It was the same in the column of deep anoxic water. The highest bacterioplankton biomass was observed in the redox layer (about 20 mg C m°). In the upper mixed layer (UML), it ranged between 15 and 25 mg C m'J. It was almost the same in the deep waters (15 to 20 mg C m"3). Bacterioplankton production was comparatively low during the cold season, ranging between 2 and 3 mg m'3 d'1 in the UML and also in the redox layer, with the minimum in the CIL (0.8 mg C m3 d"1). Over the cold season, the rates of chemosynthesis were 3 to 5 times lower than those during the warm season. Chemosynthetic production in the water column ranged between 15 and 200 mg C m"~ d'1. The layer of its maximum was 5 to 15 m below the sulfide onset boundary.
