Abstract (description)
The grazing of phytoplankton by Calanus helgolandicus was studied as it seems on the same population of this species and was determined by more or less direct method by diurnal food rations calculated on the basis of fluctuations of fat supply. In June 1959 the whole population of C. helgolandicus grazed in the column from 0 to 100 m 205 per cent in dry weight of its weight or 35 per cent of the standing crop of algae. An attempt is made to determine the true production of phytoplankton in the sea. The causes of different filtering rates in nature and in laboratory are discussed.
