Abstract
Description
Determinations of the biomass of phytoplankton were carried out during 17th cruise of the R/V «Akademik Kurchatov» at 3 stations along the Equator, between 97 and 155° W and at 4 stations in the Peruvian upwelling area, using the radiocarbon method. The rate of photosynthesis was determined in the bottles on board the ship. Growth rates of some species of phytoplankton from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were determined on pure cultures. The biomass of phytoplankton decreases at the Equator in a westward direction and its concentration maxima shift to greater depths. In the Peruvian upwelling the biomass maxima occur in a cold patch of ascended water and decrease toward its margins. In the phytoplankton of equatorial waters (0—150 m layer) carbon accounts for 2—10% (average 6%), the ratio of carbon to chlorophyll «a» in the surface equatorial waters is 25—36 (average 30%). Since phytoplankton development at the Equator is not limited by conditions of mineral nutrition, the decrease in biomass in a westward direction is probably due to the carrying of a part of the phytoplankton below the euphotic zone by turbulent mixing.
