This article is devoted to the 100-th anniversary of the birthday of Professor V.A. Vodyanitsky, the Corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. His main scientific interests involved ichthyofauna and ichthyoplankton of the Black Sea and biological productivity of the Southern Seas. It was Prof. V.A.Vodyanitsky who gave proves about complete mixing of water layers for a period as long as about 100 years and developed a new model of water exchange for the Black Sea. He was an outstanding marine sanitary hydrobiologist, organizer and head of Novorossijsk Biological Station and later the first director of the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas.
