A comparative analysis of nutrition of Engraulis encrasicholus (L.) inhabiting water areas from the Sea of Azov up to the Atlantic Ocean under different ecological and geographical conditions shown that the anchovy is highly plastic when choosing objects for food It feeds on small zooplankton, mainly copepods, which may account for 80-90 % of the total consumed food and include more than 30 species. In the regions with a low copepod biomass the anchovy feeds on Mysidacea, Amphipoda, sagittas, oikopleuras, Polychaeta and fish larvae. Inspite of a clearly pronounced euryphagia, the anchovy possesses a selectivity which permits it to choose in the first place large organisms matching it in size or the most numerous organisms.
