dc.descriptionTo maintain their populations and provide gene exchange, parasites like free-living animals have to balance dispersal and aggregation. We focus on the monoxenous parasitic crustaceans of the genus Argulus and cercariae of trematode Diplostomum pseudospathaceum, heteroxenous parasite transferred through the food chain. Interrelated processes of dispersal and aggregation of parasites are based on the behavior of both hosts and parasites. Parasites with more complex behavior often use adaptations to the host behavior, while parasites with a set of simple behavioral adaptations rely more on host manipulation. Host behavior is relatively more important at dispersal; the main goal of parasites is to find a host. Parasite behavior is relatively more important at aggregation. They impact the behavior of the hosts making them more available for conspecifics.en_US
