Abstract
Description
Nematoda inhabiting the water bodies belong to the meiobenthos, often being the most diverse and numerous groups of animals on the bottom. Hypersaline waters are among the most extreme habitats of the planet, but nematodes were able to colonize them. In the Crimea, there are more than 50 hypersaline lakes and lagoons, differing in the composition of the main ions, the total salinity, and the nature of the seasonal and interannual dynamics of physicochemical and biological parameters. In recent years, large-scale studies of the biodiversity of these lakes have been carried out, but nematodes have not received adequate attention. Some published articles mention the presence of nematodes in them. Nematoda species affiliation has been studied only in Lake Chersonesskoye, where the nematod species new for science was described. 6 species were found totally: Halomonhystera rotundicapitata (Filipjev, 1922), Geomonhystera taurica Tsalolikhin, 2007, Daptonema longicaudatum (Filipjev, 1922) Lorenzen, 1977, Daptonema maeoticum (Filipjev, 1922), Symplocostoma tenuicolle (Eberth, 1863) Wieser, 1953, and Oncholaimus sp. Two-year regular collections, which was conducted in Lake Chersonesskoye, showed that the number of nematodes at the bottom reached 490 thousand ind./m2, and in floating mats of filamentous green alga Cladophora spp. - 1,480 million ind./m2. The results of the review allow us to conclude that the level of Nematoda's study in the hypersaline waters of the Crimea is extremely low, despite their high numbers and probably an important role in the functioning of unique hypersaline ecosystems.
