Description
The structure of branchial system has been studied in four species of pelagic fishes: Trachurus mediterraneus ponticus Aleev, Spicara smaris L., Scomber scombrus L. and Coryphaena hippurus L. It is suggested that the branchial filter in the former three species plays the role of straightening grating which laminarizes the flowing flux. C. hippurus is devoid of branchial filter and the structure of its branchial system appears to be related to the anterior location of the maximum body height.
