The active metabolism (Q) in 19 species of flagellated planktonic sea algae has been investigated. Movement-connected energy expenditures, estimated as cell O2 consumption per second, have been measured by the polarographic method (using the Clark-type electrode). The regular growth of Q percentage from 10 to 75% of standard metabolism, with Reynolds number (Re) increase to 0.01 has been found, that indicates strained metabolic regime of cell at Re≈0.01. Probably, the revealed increase of Q value with Re increase is the reason of cilia appearance in place of flagella in larger Protista (for example — Ciliophora), because cilia, as propulsor lying in the boundary layer is much more effective than flagella.
