Abstract
Description
Feeding selectivity of Calanus helgolandicus was studied experimentally and in situ. The observations have shown that abundant (2–3·10⁶ cell/m³ dinoflagellates and diatoms, primarily largest available, were the major prey items for this copepod. Neither motility of dinoflagellates, nor colonial character of diatoms equipped with processes, setae and valve lessen the grazing pressure of senior age groups of Calanus. Junior copepods do not prey on large or colony-forming diatoms which have thick solid valves. Showing some chasing elements, copepods however never actually chase motile plankton. According to its feeding mode, C. helgolandicus refer to grazing organisms.
