Description
Mesoscale mushroom-like structure (MS) occurred in the central part of the Black Sea in autumn 1999. It consisted of divergence, cyclonic and anticyclonic zones. In MS phytoplankton biomass was mainly made up of large diatoms Pseudosolenia calcar-avis and Coscinodiscus janischii. In outer waters more small diatoms Dactyliosolen fragilissimus and Cerataulina pelagica predominated. Influence of MS on phytoplankton communities occurred in pulse regime. Sharp increase in biomass followed by strong wind stress which led to penetration of subpycnocline waters to the upper mixed layer.
