Приводятся данные о численности и биомассе рыб в верхнем звукорассеивающем слое в двух подрайонах западной части Индийского океана. Выявлены массовые виды рыб и степень их доминирования. Приводятся сведения о географическом и вертикальном распределении ряда доминирующих видов рыб.

Larvae, fry and adult forms of 58 fish families belonging to 4 ichthyocenes (epi-, meso-, bathipelagial and neritic with predominance (92%) of the mesopelagial ichtyocene) were found in the studied region of the epipelagial sound-scattering layers. Vinciguerria nimbaria was a dominating species amounting to 64.6% of all the caught fish, except for myctophides. The catches confirmed high productivity of the preequatorial subarea in the western part of the Indian ocean (at 05°00' north — 00°00' north): the quantity of fish was 0.72 specimes/100 m3, biomass — 0.102 mg/100 m3, while in the intermediate subarea the quantity of fish was 0.62 specimens/100 m3, and biomass — 0.036 mg/100 m3.
