On the sections of shells of three species Crassostrea tulipa, C. denticulata and Ostrea hyotis, inhabiting the Atlantic coast of Africa the author detected age marks. They are alternating light-color porous and darker dense layers well seen in the top of the lower (left) valve. For a mangrove oyster C. tulipa the period of layer formation was established to be one month. It is proposed that the layers in shells of C. denticulata and O. hyotis are also a consequence of the monthly rhythm of growth.
