D. vanhoeffeni is of dominant mesopelagic fish species in the East Atlantic Ocean. The species is distributed between 20° N and 20° S off Africa and westwards to about 30° W but is most abundant in the Guinean and Angolan Domes and along the Equator east of 18° W. The range of diel vertical migrations varies from 250 to 700 m. Most specimens aged are 6 to 6.5 month old and all specimens older than 4 months are mature. The Bertalanffy growth equation and some growth to age correlations are presented, and daily specific production is determined by different methods. With its P/B coefficient equal to 4.9, this species may be considered as highly productive.
