The main steps in development of algological on the Black Sea and the role of V.A. Vodyanitsky in initiating these studies first at Novorossijsk and Sevastopol Biostations and later at the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences are described. An inventary of species composition bonitation of benthic vegetation of the Black Sea were made and biology of mass algal and sea weed species studied. Beginning the 1980-s, research in mariculture is conducted involving studies of biology, productivity and biotechnology of algal propagation. The main tasks of further investigation of phytobenthos in the Black Sea have been outlined.
