It IBSS marine sanitary hydrobiology dates from 1964 when the first laboratory of such orientation has been established. It was the time when Professor V.A. Vodyanitsky, a corresponding member of Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, headed the institute. Owing to his competence and support this trend of research was given close attention and yielded good results. Along with making a brief survey of the progress achieved, the author recalls how the first steps in promoting sanitary biology studies were taken and what role V.А. Vodyanitsky played in this.
