A method for the preparation of microscope sections of fish otoliths for use in daily growth studies is described. Different zones of growth which carry specific ecological information were distinguished on the otoliths of Ceratoscopelus warmingii. The daily marks in these zones were counted. The life cycle of this species in equatorial waters of the Indian Ocean is less than a year. Larval metamorphosis is completed at about a month of age, sexual maturation culminates at four months, and the average age of sexually mature fish is about six months and only a few fish reach an age of 10 months. Values obtained for the specific daily production (0.013) and for the annual P/B-coefficient (4.7) characterize this species as highly productive.
