Original experimental data are presented on the buoyancy of 235 planktonic and benthonic species from the oceanic, saltish and freash waters. The majority of planktonic organisms have a buoyancy similar to the neutral level (—0.03⩽Δ⩽0.00). The buoyancy of the benthonic organisms varies within wider range (from —1.44 to +0.35) but in most cases it is sharply negative conforming to the Δ<—0.03 values; only benthonic highest plants. and some benthonic algae have positive buoyancy.
