Uptake rate of nonorganic phosphorus by microplankton and phosphate turnover time in the upper 50m water layer in the Black Sea during warm period (August — September, 1990) is estimated. Upper (10—15 m) phosphate depleted layer of the water is characterised by high uptake rate (180•10-4 mkM P•h-1 in average) and short turnover time (0,9h in average) of phosphate. It is sugesting that phosphate ingestion from the deep water strata is insignificant and nutrients regeneration is the main source of phosphorus nutrition for microplankton in the upper water layers of the Black Sea during the late-summer. It has been shown that spatial variability of phosphate uptake rate is connected with the trophic status of regions: chlorophyll a concentration (as index of phytoplankton abundance ) is the main factor that determines uptake rate’s variability in the open and in the north-western parts of the Black Sea.
