Abstract

Description

Noctiluca miliaris of the halostatic zone of the Black Sea is found in waters of lowered temperatures but it avoids the cold intermediate layer. Two peaks are marked in the quantitative development of phytoplankton: in the thermocline layer or above it and at the boundary of the cold intermediate layer. A higher content of olive-green cells is revealed to be confined to interfaces of waters of different quality and also to areas where turbulent processes get weaker. Plant communities of the summer and autumn of 1976 and 1979-revealed a tendency to increased contents of Pyrrophyta, Chrysophyta, Bacillariophyta and small Flagellata as well. The difference is the most marked (53-fold in the autumn) in the content of olive-green cells. The cold intermediate layer is a link through which mainly, littoral areas influence open areas of the sea.
