Biomasses of phytoplankton and nonpredatory zooplankton in waters of the equatorial zone in the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean and of the equatorial divergence zone in the eastern part of the Pacific Ocean have been compared by the method suggested by G. G. Winberg. With the exception of the most productive parts of these zones zooplankton nutrition by live phytoplankton and even by live unicells (including bacteria and protozoa) is possible only with unreally high rates of water filtration. It permits concluding on preferential nutrition of sea zooplankton by dead organic matter on the most part of meso- and oligotrophic ocean zones even under conditions of trophic independence of planktonic communities.
