Bottom sediments of lemans and premouth regions of the north-western part of the Black Sea were studied for the physicochemical properties (granulometric composition, chloroform extracted bitumoids and their element composition), quantity of heterotrophic and hydrocarbon-oxidizing bacteria, macrozoobenthos. The sediments under consideration belong to the terrigenic fine silts and biogenic formations with the admixture of clayey and sandy particles. The quantity of heterotrophic bacteria is equal to 103-106, that of the hydrocarbon-oxidizing ones — 10-105 cell/g. In fine silts the quantity of the neutral hydrocarbon fraction increases: oils—up to 30.06-49.98 mg/100 g and methane-naphthene hydrocarbons — up to 5.19 mg/100 g whereas at the other stations their content is 4.00-20.04 and 2.00-4.02 mg/100 g of dry sediment, respectively. In the chloroform bitumoid the elemental oxygen is lost with carbon and sulphur accumulated, due to which bitumoid becomes carbonized and nonsaturated.
