Phytoplankton species, Sceletonema costatum, Ebria tripartita, Pontosphaera huxleyi, dominating in the western part of the Black Sea in May were characterized by distinct areas of distribution. The highest number of cells (146000 mill. cell/m3) were observed in the Danube region, biomass (61 g/m3) in the coastal part of the Burgassian Bay. The basic mass of phytoplankton in the Danube region was at the autolysis stage and not more than 30% of cells luminesced bright-red. In the rest part of the water area with the other composition almost the whole phytoplankton was in a good physiological state. The coastal part of the Burgassian Bay was the exclusion; here only 30% of the predominant population Cerataulina bergonii consisted of bright-red luminescent cells. Among Peridinia, Chrysophyta and fine Flagellata there were species containing apparently no chlorophyll which being mobile did not luminesce at all or luminesced green.
