Ostracoda play an important ecological role in aquatic ecosystems of various types, but it is very poor studied in the case of hypersaline water bodies of the Crimea. Eucypris mareotica (Fischer, 1855) is widely distributed in Eurasia and North Africa, is the most halotolerant species of ostracods. It is possible to determine at what temperature and salinity they lived by the ratio of isotopes in the shells of fossil ostracods. This species is widely used for paleoclimatic and paleolimnological reconstructions. Hypersaline water bodies are the usual elements of the landscape of a significant part of the territory of the Crimean Peninsula. Data on long-term study (2005-2017) of E. mareotica are analyzed. The species was quite abundant in many hypersaline reservoirs of the Crimea during this study; it dwelled in plankton, benthos and floating mats of the filamentous green alga Cladophora spp. The number of individuals varied widely, reaching high values in all these biotopes. The maximum concentration of crustaceans in the plankton exceeded 650,000 ind./m3, in benthos 565,000 ind./m2, in mats more than 9,900,000 ind./kg of mat wet weight, i.е. 9,000,000-15,000,000 ind./m2. There was no significant correlation of its numbers with salinity, temperature and pH. Probably, concentrations of food and calcium played a bigger role in determining the number of crustaceans. Representatives of 22 species of microalgae, as well as animals (Nematoda, Copepoda, Cladocera) were found in the gut content of these crustaceans. The high abundance of E. mareotica and presence of calcium it their shell make it as a convenient object for assessment of both modern lake ecosystems and paleolakes. The species is known in the deposits of the region, starting from the Miocene; knowledge on modern its populations may promote to better reconstruction of paleoenvironment changes in the region. A wide range of feed organisms makes it possible to use a gut content of this species to better assess biodiversity in lakes.
